message to daddy at work....

Poor Oliver

We went camping on the fourth of July weekend and had a blast with friends boating.  That is when I noticed Oliver had to go to the bathroom quite often and he would cry eveytime he had to go.  He would dance around holding himself and cry about having to go.  He was drinking a lot of water due to the hot weather but I though it was odd that he had such an urgency to go so often.

When we got back home from camping he started having accidents and continued to have to go and he looked so uncomfortable going potty.  Then wednesday morning he was puking sick.  I thought possibly he might have a bladder infection or something???so I brought him in to check and see what might be going on.  He peed in a cup and we waited to see.

The doctor came in and said he didn't have a bladder infection.  Ok.  Good.  Then she said his urine came back with a lot of sugar and keytones in it.  Ok....what does that mean?  She told me she wanted to check his blood sugar.  Results came in.....

"Oliver has diabetes."
"Umm.  What!  Are you sure?"  So unexpected.
"Yes, with his urine results, blood results, and frequent urinating....He needs to be admitted in hospital.  I will actually call and see if he can be an outpatient.

Waiting.....

"Nope, he has to be admitted to hospital.  They will get him insulin and check him throughout the night."

Talk about something coming out of left field.

We get to the hospital and a nurse comes in with insulin, shots, and a blood meter.  He was going to teach me how to use it and how to give the shots.  I asked him if they were 100% that he had diabetes and he said yes.  While he was talking with me they took his blood sugar....normal.
They decided not to give him insulin until he had something to eat and they checked it again.

(***When I was first told he had diabetes I was sick to my stomach.  While we were waiting I held Oli and prayed.  While praying I felt peaceful.  I knew at this point he was going to be ok.  All the thoughts of his life being forever changed by this and having to worry about him every day left and while they were telling me he had it I was thinking, No...he doesn't.  But how can you argue tests...)

I asked the nurse why his blood sugar was normal now and he said that can happen and in his heart he knew Oliver had diabetes and basically saying I should make peace with it.

The doc came in.  Said he was getting insulin that night and I asked if there were any tests to make sure this was it no questions about it.  They said they would do a 3 month blood history and make sure.

Having 3 kids who wanted to run around and play in a tiny hospital room was very stressful.  The doc at clinic said he was not dehydrated so they wouldn't give him an IV.  They thought different.  Poor kid was poked and poked and poked and poked.  On the way to the clinic Oliver asked me if they were going to poke him.  I promised him he was not getting poked at all!  Boy was he upset at me!
2 hours it took them to successfully find a vien.  They tried his left hand until that was destroyed..moved on to his left arm until they bruised him all up there.  Finally got his right hand.  Still had to draw blood from arm though.  Ahhhhh!  Poor kid.

After driving my other babies home at 10:30 at night and getting them where they needed to go I went back for a horrible nights sleep.  The next day the doc came in and said he did not have diabetes and he was severely dehydrated and that is why the tests came back as they did!  Whoo Hoo!  Wonderful news!  Then I felt bad that he had to go through this.  :(

He wore this Papa Jerry hat all day.
Finally allowing him water.  It took hours to get some.

 High spirits.
Mark called and said to go straight from the hospital to the store and buy him a bey blade that he has wanted.  You better believe we did.  Mark cried when he saw this pic.  He felt bad to.  Such a brave happy boy after it all.
Marki got sick that night too.  She broke out in hives that night pretty bad. :(
We played games while waiting to go home.

Such a brave boy Oliver!  We love you so much!
